How to Fix Apps That Won't Open or Work on Chromebook
Is your favorite app crashing or refusing to open on your Chromebook? This is a common issue, especially with Android apps and Linux tools. Before you give up, try these proven fixes to get your apps working again.
1. Force Stop and Restart the App Sometimes an app gets "stuck" in the background.
Go to Settings > Apps > Manage your apps.
Find the app that isn't working.
Click Force stop, then try opening it again.
2. Update the App via Play Store An outdated app might not be compatible with your current ChromeOS version.
Open the Google Play Store.
Click your Profile Icon > Manage apps & device.
Check if there is an Update available for the broken app.
3. Check for Linux Container Issues (For Linux Apps) If your Linux apps (like GIMP or VLC) aren't opening, your Linux container might be off.
Open the Terminal app.
Wait for it to load. If it shows an error, try restarting your Chromebook.
Run the command:
sudo apt updateto refresh the system.
4. Reset App Preferences This will reset your app settings without deleting your data.
Go to Settings > Apps > Manage your apps.
Click the three dots in the corner and select Reset app preferences.
Conclusion: In most cases, a simple update or clearing the cache fixes the problem. If an app still won't work, try uninstalling and reinstalling it from the Play Store.
